Wiggles divorce: Inside Emma Watkin’s break-up with Lachlan Gillespie
The Wiggles star Lachlan Gillespie has finally broken his silence on his split from wife and band mate, Emma Watkins. The Wiggles Big Show! Watkins, 27, and Gillespie, 30, tell Kate Waterhouse about what they've learnt from being part of the Wiggles empire, why they initially hid their romance, and their plans for a mini-Wiggle. How did you both get into entertainment? I did music theatre for three years, then moved to Melbourne and started auditioning … I got an audition for the Dorothy [the Dinosaur] show, inand I've worked with the Wiggles ever since.
I studied as a dancer. And then, during school, I had an injury, and then I learnt how to make films … I came back and did full-time dance and then I went to uni to do film again, and then I got the audition for the Dorothy show.
That's when I met Lachy, [who] was already Captain Feathersword on that show, and I was a Fairy, and we started touring together. And then, I was taken to Wiggles to do filming and dancing. Did you watch the Wiggles growing up?
Yes, on one of the old regional videos on VHS. They cut [to the audience of the live show] and it's my sister and I dancing. Advertisement The Wiggles out on the road.
Jessica Layt How did you find out that you had landed the coveted role as a Wiggle?
Simon [the Red Wiggle] was like, "Murray and Jeff and I, we're going to retire at the end of the year. We're starting a new line-up … He was like, "We want to have you. From then, it has just been the weirdest, most amazing experience. What has been the most amazing part? It has just become our lives. It's kind of weird: It's seven days a week, we meet children everywhere we go, in the shopping centre, on the plane.
It's so lovely to meet so many families around the world The mothers used to watch it when they were little and now they're bringing their children. So that generational thing, I think that's why the Wiggles are so special.

Did your romance blossom during the Wiggles? I really fell in love with Lachy in the first moment … But it took him a long time [laughs]! It was getting to the point where we were like, "we probably want to share it", though at the time I didn't know that Lachy had planned to propose, so We talk about lots of things, especially work, which can be a stressful environment in a fun way. I've got to stop biting my nails for the wedding - that's what she tells me. We've definitely talked about having a little Wiggle, or an "Olive Wiggle", as someone called it.
That's what you get when you put purple and yellow together. When we're at home, I'm the cleaner-upperer; I do the vacuuming because I love it. Em has so many things going on, and she has too many handbags.
I don't say anything about it, though. And I'm the cook. She can make scrambled eggs and toast with avocado, but that's basically it. We've taken on being Wiggles as a part of life now. We respect so much what we do and who our audience is that it has never been a problem. I love her million times over. I can't imagine being a Wiggle without Emma.
We met on my first day at the Wiggles. Lachy was Captain Feathersword, so I originally knew him as a pirate. I thought he was really tall, and was even better-looking with an eye patch. I had no idea what to talk with him about, but I thought he was really cute and a great singer. He and I ended up being good friends.

I was in a relationship at the time and he was, too. The following year, Lachy moved from his role as Captain Feathersword and joined our supporting performers cast. I was so excited. We both became Wiggly dancers. I remember our first kiss; it was while we were on tour in Melbourne. There's something about Melbourne that's quite lovely; it's arty and magical. Since that tour, we really have spent almost every single day together.
A lot of people ask me, "How do you do that? I can see him 24 hours a day and I don't get sick of him. Generally when we get to the shows, that's when we can be busy doing things apart. Lachy plays the piano while I go and do a ballet warm-up. Initially, other people in the Wiggles didn't know [about our relationship].
